Post Op Blues

Update on Mistral...yesterday she was sterilized and whoopee, no bad things were found. The vet did remove a polyp from her insides and explained that is probably why I saw blood coming from the vulva.

She does have loads of mammary tumours though but the vet said these might get smaller now she's been spayed. Apparently they are hormone dependent, so fingers crossed. If not, she'll need those stripping out at some point. Hopefully they are not cancerous. She's obviously been over-bred and has also had puppies left on her for too long.

And she's also on a diet but I've not told her yet. Now that she's been sterilized I know from experience how important it is to keep weight off during those first months whilst the hormones are going crazy. If you don't, it's so hard to get it off later. In Mistral's case, she really had too much weight before we started but there was no choice - it had to be done.

She's doing well today, staggering about a bit but wouldn't you? She must be very uncomfortable but she ate some breakfast, so all appears well with the world.

In the not very good photograph below, you see the Pension Milou Sick Bay - Beau on one side with his bandages and Mistral on the other - a small plaster in the centre of her stomach.

Mia, meanwhile, is progressing. She needs more weight, the skin needs to improve but it is. Time is what she needs and hopefully we've both got plenty of that.

So far so good at Pension Milou. And thanks again to everyone for their support. En pension at the moment, is Maya, the Golden, Maggie, the Red and White Irish setter and Daisy, the Border Terrier - all are spayed so they are all being most understanding of Mistral!

She does look sorry for herself like Beau yesterday. I don't blame them and hope they'll soon feel better. I like the one of the sick bay. They look so comfortable..poor Jilly, where do you get to sit?

Jilly, you are so wonderful to them. I love that you care so much! Hugs to both new babies!

Beau sounds like such a good boy. If you come across anything that uses Far Infrared, a heating pad or a "rainbow" (half dome) you might want to try putting Beau, et al, under. I know I sound like a crackpot but I use mine from time to time and my kitties love it. It promotes healing at the cellular level.
I looked up M & M's breeds and they come from long standing lines as far as I can tell. I think they will be beauteous when they've had time to get their girlish figures back. '~)

PJ, thanks for that information. I've heard good things about those heating pads. Problem here is that the dogs play musical chairs, mostly with my chair or sofa - and really it wouldn't be possible to have a heating pad on these - other dogs would fall over the wiring. Am sure it would work if I put one of the dogs behind a babygate in kitchen or bathroom but I don't think they'd allow it somehow - they all want to be part of the action.

Since, posting, Beau is doing fine with his ear. He's broken one stitch but it doesn't seem to matter too much. It will heal. Mistral is just fine, running about as if nothing had happened and demanding food!

Glad to know the poor little doggies are doing well. You make a good nurse Jilly. What are you like with people? Much the same I expect!

Jilly you are a Saint. I just love reading the progress on the two new kids, and the others too. The world needs more people like you.

Update: Mistral is now running around like a puppy. You'd not even know she'd had a op a few days ago. Beau broke one of the stitches but I think no harm done. He's still bandaged up but doing fine.

As to your question, Gail's Man, well I've never really been tested but have to say I think the saints of this world are people who look after the old and sick and mentally ill. Dogs are easy in comparison. First of all, they never complain but love you whatever you do.

Sound like things are looking up, Jilly. As for the heaing pad, you can put it on top of a crate if you have one (which I doubt). With the dome I turn it up on it's end so it radiates out, although, I also put it flat and drape it with a towel and then they hide in there. I love the way it releases deep muscle tension. You can fall asleep under it in no time.

Good to read that things are progressing reasonably well, Jilly. And the old bounce seems to be back in the tread. Goodo ...

What a wonderful blog. I'd love to have a dog but it is impossible for me where and how I live. My younger son has had his adored Isis for almost 17 years. She is still beautiful. It is a mix of lab and shepherd. It is rare to see such a big dog living for so long.
